Blog Update

Today we planned and developed our new idea for our music video. This is the idea of having a classroom of students where we see what's really going on in the mind of 2 individual students and the teacher, whilst in the classroom. We have matched the footage up to the lyrics and said how many seconds each shot will be. This is so we can look at our plan and film knowing exactly what we need to. We also produced our shot list and so we know what shot we are filming, what characters are int he shot, where we are filming the shot, and when we re filming the shot.

We have decided our two filming days which are Friday of this week and Monday of next week. This will allow us to film effectively within the space of 2 days and enable us to hopefully get all our filming done before we break up for the christmas holidays.

JPEG Images saved of Banner Designs

From my previous ideas and designs in gimp for my logo and banner design, I was able to put in temporary images to design my banner further. At the moment I have used an existing band image and put it into my banner, but when I have a picture of my own band, this replace it. I produced 2 different logo and banner designs. This is because I wasn't settled on one idea, so I tried 2 different colour schemes, 2 different style of images, and 2 different ways to place the title in the banner. From looking at both my designs, I prefer the second one, and this is mainly because I think the colours look better and this layout will best suit our artists (band). The reason for this is because it still gives an indie feel and the 'R' to Revolution is a guitar shape and this re-inforces the indie side of the band, and it put the logo in the banner.

Logo & Banner Design Developments in Gimp

I have designed 2 different Banners, one consisting of the logo as well, and one not, to give me a view of what looks better (to have the logo in the banner or not). I have also taken the opportunity to produce two, using different colours to see which one looks best. From this I have decided that the black and white colours look better than the brown and red colours.

Change of initial idea for our music video

As a group we have decided to change the idea we had mapped out for our own produce of a music video to 'Half The World Away' by Oasis. The reason for this is that we feel like there is not enough happening, that will engage the viewer and male the music video interesting. with this we recognised that we could adapt and change our idea to develop what we could create and experiment even more to create a better music video.

Our new idea is to have a location where we would be able to look at different types of people. We decided to do use a cafe where we could looking into the minds of these people and see what they are actually thinking. This idea is to look past reality and what we see when we look at people, to what they are actually thinking/feeling and what is in their minds. We decided to show this through having them day-dreaming in their own world, where there can be a connection with the lyrics 'half the world away'.

Logo and Banner designs in Gimp

From these images you can see that I have designed my ideas in Gimp. I started with my logo design (image 1) and then went on to develop this by cropping it to fit in place with a banner. This can be seen in image 2, and a design like this is what would appear at the bands website. In the third image below, you can see that I have started to put my ideas together by writing the name of the band into the design. We took the idea of collaborating the logo and the banner together, to appear on the website. We also used a guitar shape to template the 'R' of Revolution to emphasis the band's indie and rocky feel.

Website Design Idea

Here are my logo designs for my artists logo. This would be what appears at the top of my webpage. The logo needs to connect with the artist and the genre and so I designed a few to give me ideas, and then I will put these ideas together to produce my final logo.

Here is my webpage design for our band 'Revolution'. Here I have looked at how I would like the layout of my webpage to be. As you can see, at the top of the webpage I have put a banner with a logo and the band name. Alongside this the banner would have a picture of the band and I would like to adapt the banner and logo to make them into one. I will explore this when i begin to design my logo and banner using Gimp. From my design you can also see that I have included typical conventions of a website, like links to other pages, a title, images and infromation. I have not only took on board the conventions of a website, but the conventions of a website for an artist. For example, below is an example of an 2 different artists webpage (Chris Brown and N Dubz). these are 2 complete different artist however they still hold the same conventions of a website for an artist. for example, they have similar links. These are things like news, music, media, tour, photos, videos, blog and events.
Chris Brown's webpage has it's links on a scroll down navigator which is vertical at the top of the page. Whereas, N Dubz website has their links on a horizontal navigator which appears under their banner, at he top of their page. This shows examples of how and where I can place the links on my own webpage.

Final Music Video Idea: Detailed Plan To Song lyrics

VERSE: Start with the man - Showing the boiling of the kettle, making tea and pouring out his cereal in his kitchen ( everyday life).
I would like to leave this city, this old town don't smell too pretty and
I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

VERSE: Show woman - Showing her queuing up in prison, getting porridge and water for breakfast (prison life).
And when I leave this island I'll book myself into a soul asylum
'Cause I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

VERSE: Split Screen - Man: (He's trapped without her) hands on head, can't eat.
Girl: (she's trapped in prison) pushed back into cell.
Man: Shows 2 tickets from the draw, rips them up.
Girl: Laying in prison bed, staring at the ceiling.
So here I go, I'm still scratching around in the same old hole
My body feels young but my mind is very old
So what do you say?
You can't give me the dreams that are mine anyway

CHORUS: Band - Boy turns on TV and zooms into screen which has the band singing, this is the chorus, then the end of the chorus, it zooms back out and goes straight into the woman in her cell.
You're half the world away
Half the world away
Half the world away
I've been lost I've been found but I don't feel down

VERSE: Flashback - Next verse shows flashbacks of why she is in prison (drugs). Prison sentence, police find drugs on her but they aren't hers she was set up. It then goes to the second part of the verse where the woman and man talking over visiting time in prison where she is crying, saying she is innocent and that it wasn't her.
And when I leave this planet, you know I'd stay but I just can't stand it and
I can feel the warning signs running around my mind
And when if I could leave this spirit, I'll find me a hole and I'll leave in it
And I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

VERSE: Back To Split Screen - Boy: Running a bath, washing face with water.
Girl: In gym, with security constantly watching her.
I go, I'm still scratching around in the same old hole
My body feels young but my mind is very old
So what do you say?
You can't give me the dreams that are mine anyway

CHORUS: End chorus to 'I dont feel down' repeated x7 - Band in street/road (Autumn/winter setting) dark, cold, misty, leaves on the floor, maybe snow) and follows them to show man and woman reunited when she is let out of prison and ending image of them walking away from the camera, down the road, together.
Half the world away x3
I've been lost I've been found but I don't feel down
No I don't feel down, no I don't feel down
I don't feel down x5

Oasis Half The World Away Lyrics

I would like to leave this city, this old town don't smell too pretty and
I can feel the warning signs running around my mind
And when I leave this island I'll book myself into a soul asylum
'Cause I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

So here I go, I'm still scratching around in the same old hole
My body feels young but my mind is very old
So what do you say?
You can't give me the dreams that are mine anyway

You're half the world away
Half the world away
Half the world away
I've been lost I've been found but I don't feel down

And when I leave this planet, you know I'd stay but I just can't stand it and
I can feel the warning signs running around my mind
And when if I could leave this spirit, I'll find me a hole and I'll leave in it
And I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

Here I go, I'm still scratching around in the same old hole
My body feels young but my mind is very old
So what do you say?
You can't give me the dreams that are mine anyway

You're half the world away
Half the world away
Half the world away
I've been lost I've been found but I don't feel down

No I don't feel down, no I don't feel down
I don't feel down, I don't feel down
I don't feel down, I don't feel down
I don't feel down

Half The World Away Song Lyric Word Cloud

Conventions for music videos

There are many generic conventions for music videos in our indie genre. What I found is that with the 2 bands I analysed, they didn't have music videos that told a story, it was them performing the song, whilst playing their instrument. This supports Goodwin's theory of having a link between lyrics and visuals. Godwin's theory is that in music videos there should be a link between lyrics and visuals, lyrics and the music and genre characteristics should be presented. In Mumford and Sons music video to little lion man, they show the artists actually playing their instruments. This shows that they want to be recognised as musicians as well as singers, and this is the same as Biffy Clyro's music video to Bubbles where the video consists of the performing. When music videos do this I tend to see the artist for what they really are, more than a music video which tells a story. This is because when music videos have actors in, or the artist acts out a story to the song they are singing, it seems more made up as you know that it isn't a real story. However, when the artist actual performs the song or it is just them in the video it seems more realistic. This tends to be very popular at the moment as most celebrities videos are them performing to the camera, with a little story to show, but which isn't made as the main focus.

Music Video Prep - SWOT Analysis

Strengths
We have the strength to make up any sort of artist we want, as long as it fits to the Indie genre of the song. This means  that we can make our artist appeal to our target audience whether that means that they appear funny, interesting or unique etc... We also have the strength of being able to make it a solo artist or a band.

Weaknesses
We have the weakness that it is only 1 type of genre, and so there is a limited type of audience that we can target.

Opportunities
We have the opportunity to target a new market as we have spotted a gap in the market where females between the ages 18-34 have not bee targeted. This means that we will focus on targeting this audience.

Threats
We have threats of other popular artists in the same music genre. These include, James Blunt, Matt Cardle, Biffy Clyro and Mumford and Sons. Their target audience is females between 13-17 and males between 18-34, which is where you can see we spotted our gap in the market with females from 18-34.
